China Unicom plans to spend about 70 billion Yuan to expand its 3G network in China during the year 2011. This figure is shrinking compared to last year where the second largest operator in China spends 110 billion Yuan for the expansion of 3G networks. Although investment in 3G networks in the year 2010 is not known until the closing years, but investment by the company in 2009, where China Unicom began to develop new 3G access, it has exceeded projections in 2008. As of June 30, 2010, China Unicom had 153 000 BTS (base transceiver station) 3G, grew by about 127.8 percent compared to June 2009. In China, the company claims to own 3G network has reached out to about 95 percent of the country.
Meanwhile, the number of BTS 2G (GSM) operator that was established in 2000 it reached 306 000 units, growing 24.1 percent compared to same period previous year. “Our corporate’s customers give a significant contribution, especially from 3G access. The company-client companies contributed a third of total company revenue. While the other two thirds are individual customers,” said Tian Wenke, general manager of China Unicom service department, as quoted Cellular News, Monday, September 20, 2010.
The company’s net profit continued to decline compared to previous months. Compared to last month alone, China Unicom profit fell 62 percent because most are used to roll out 3G networks and subsidies for some mobile bundling.
