The other day for some reason I thought about the only time in my life that I have ever been fired. I was working in the laser transit department of a vast multinational conglomerate about five years ago, when I was starting to have a great deal of stress and anxiety. I was responsible for so many different things and so many different little tasks, that eventually I ended up screwing them up and causing a lot of damage. I can’t really get into the details of exactly what I did, because I have been legally barred from discussing the details, but let’s just say that the events that I caused were newsworthy.
I never understood why I was put in charge of the rotary laser level project, simply because I knew that I just didn’t have the experience to get the job done. A lot of the guys there knew me quite well, which led me to believe that I was just put in the position so that I could take direction and not ask too many questions. But I’m not so cynical as to believe this scenario. I like to think that people who put me in charge really believed in my abilities, and that I would ultimately make up for any shortcomings that my resume had.
